I'm playing a megacorporation game right now with only 2 planets both ecumenopoli. I've managed to stay under empire sprawl the whole game. It can be difficult at first as everyone outstrips you in resource production, but by mid-game I've outpaced everyone else. If you need to quickly decrease the sprawl’s space, removing a few districts and visualizing the section is best. Because there are such considerable clusters, which are not worth expanding. Whatever you remove is released from the Stellaris empire sprawl value after it.On the other hand, if you play it right with the extra pops you get you should outpace the growth of the penalties. Be pacifist, get beacon of liberty, and be docile. Those are the main ways you can reduce it from the start. The unity changes balance out the different empires... but the AI changes are going to be what stands out. I understand why people wouldn't pay attention to them when they were announced. Last few times they talked about improving the AI you couldn't really feel the changes. You definitely do this time. Efficiency matters: the bigger you get the less efficient your tech and unity expenditures become. You CAN ABSOLUTELY play "tall" in the current patch: I just beat a GA x25 crisis with a tall empire build (~size 150 for most of the game, size 360 when the crisis actually hit).
